Welcome back, adventure seekers! In this episode, I dive into why I picked the KTM 390 Adventure for my epic motorcycle journey from Argentina to Alaska, after exploring several other contenders. Join me on my first rides through the stunning landscapes of Jalisco, Mexico, as I test out my new bike and share my initial impressions.
Starting from Guadalajara, I ventured through Tapalpa, Atemajac de Brizuela, and other picturesque towns, experiencing everything from agave fields to local delicacies like tamales de acelgas. One of my goals for these rides was to reach the 1,000-kilometer mark for the bike’s first service.
Why the KTM 390 Adventure? It’s the perfect balance of power, weight, and off-road capability for a solo traveler. Lightweight enough to handle on my own, it also boasts features like spoke wheels, adjustable suspension, and excellent range—all crucial for a trip through diverse terrains. I explain how Mexican import laws influenced my decision and why this bike edged out competitors like the BMW G 310 GS and Suzuki DR650.
Along the way, I share initial insights into prepping the bike with crash bars, a luggage system, and more for this ambitious journey. Plus, I talk about the challenges of shipping my motorcycle to South America, finding gear, and choosing tires that will hold up on both highways and dirt roads.
Get a sneak peek into ride settings, impressions of the KTM’s features, and how it performs on dirt roads like the route from Chiquilistlán to Atemajac de Brizuela. From tamales and tacos to breathtaking views of the Tequila Volcano, these rides had it all!
In next week's episode I’ll be flying to Phoenix to gather parts and gear before returning to Guadalajara to finalize preparations. The countdown to my Argentina-to-Alaska adventure is on!
