St. George, Utah, has a problem — its soil is remarkably variable.
The problem came to a head only a few years after St. George's new airport noticed a significant issue... The one runway was rising up to an entire foot in some areas. Moving earth is a problem anywhere, but it's a BIG problem on a commercial airport runway.
Engineers identified the villain: blue clay. To eliminate the issue, they devised a multi-month shutdown of the entire airport while Utah contractor JP Excavating overexcavated the area by up to seventeen feet and rebuilt the whole runway cross-section.
We say all this because JP Excavating is now moving millions of yards immediately next to the airport to prepare for a new commercial development. And thanks to their history battling the blue clay, they know how to handle it nowadays!
