Language passions have been rekindled in Tamil Nadu, thanks to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Defending the withholding of Samagra Shiksha funds to Tamil Nadu, the Minister questioned when the rest of the country has accepted the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, why was Tamil Nadu exercising monopoly?
He accused its leaders of being divisive, politically motivated and depriving students of an opportunity to learn three languages. He charged that Tamil Nadu was not coming to terms with the Constitution and ignoring the rule of law.
Reacting strongly, Chief Minister M.K Stalin questioned which provision of the Constitution mandates the three-language policy.
But why are we hearing such strong reactions now, and why is Tamil Nadu so opposed to the three-language policy?
