A good manual lathe can be such an awesome addition to a bicycle framebuilding shop. In this video, I talk about the usefulness of lathes in general, what they do (manual lathe basics), and the specific applications to bicycle framebuilding. I demonstrate facing, turning, chamfering, drilling, boring, and parting, and I talk about how to do threading on a lathe, as well. I talk about how lathes can be used for post-welding machining on the headtube and bottom bracket, how they're used for mountain-bike seat collars, and how they can be used for crown-race-seat machining on forks. I talk about how bicycle framebuilders like Firefly Bicycles and Number 22 Bicycles use CNC lathes to butt titanium tubes. I mention various other uses for a lathe in bicycle framebuilding, as well as other tasks I've been able to use my lathe for, from my framebuilding fixture to the PVC pipes I use for welding rod storage.
