It’s going to be challenging, cause there are so many compelling moments. With interviews and stories behind them. Including a song that Led Zeppelin aimed to make as complicated as possible, so nobody would be able to effectively cover it, but it was so complex they had a hard time recording it. Another that Billy Joel created as a tribute to the Righteous Brothers and it was so good the singer he mimicked in the song covered it! and a Boston song that experts have said is the perfect vocal and yet the singer still felt he could deliver a better vocal. Think about this: everyone’s voice is entirely unique. Sure, a skilled impersonator can mimic someone’s sound, but at the end of the day, it’s just that—a mimic. No one else truly has the same voice. Some are so distinctive, so unforgettable, that they become the soundtrack of an entire generation. That’s a heavy thought for sure. As we dive into the top vocal moments of the 1970s, these standout voices share one thing in common: distinction. They defied expectations, delivering sounds that were as surprising as they were unforgettable. These moments weren’t just about hitting notes—they were a blend of raw talent, deep sincerity, and unshakable authenticity. That’s the subject of today’s fiver I actually had to give you a top 6 with some honorable mentions because there were so many worth moments… Coming in at #6…it’s Roger Daltrey’s performance on The Who’s “Reign O’er Me” from Quadrophenia. In a January 2010 press release, Pete Townshend reflected on why Quadrophenia stands as his most multi-dimensional work. Townshend explained: "Quadrophenia is music—angry music. It never lets up; it's full of energy. But at its heart, it's just the story of a kid having a really bad day. It rains, he sits on a rock, and he reflects on his life—his present, his future. And then, he does something he's never done before—he prays.” That moment of prayer inspired one of the album's most iconic tracks, "Reign O’er Me,” delivered with an explosion of emotion by Roger Daltrey. One of the most interesting parts of the story of this great track is Roger’s organic interpretation of Pete’s lyrics. It is why it has to be regarded as one of the best vocal moments of the 70s.
