Would you be surprised to learn that I discourage my clients from using labels when describing their mental health problems? Why do I do this - after all if you have been given a diagnosis of PTSD, major depression, anxiety disorder, bi-polar disorder, etc., shouldn’t you let the judge know?
As I discuss in this video I discourage the use of labels because the judge wants to know how your symptoms effect you in your day to day life or when you are trying to work. The judge has read your record and knows what labels have been assigned - the purpose of your hearing is to help the judge understand how your mental health issues impact you.
Remember that Social Security defines “disability” in terms of how your mental health problems impact your capacity to perform work reliably. So detailed descriptions of how you become anxious and panicky around males who give you orders, or testimony about auditor or visual hallucinations and how they make impossible for you to concentrate or act appropriately will help the judge understand the vocational implications of your mental health conditions. #depressionandsocialsecuritydisability #PTSDandSSDI #mentalhealthdisability
