Wike Endorses Fubara’s Impeachment + Senate Clarifies Natasha’s Suspension| W/OjyOkpe

The political crisis rocking Rivers s State, took another dimension after the governor of the state, Sim Fubara, was denied access to the temporary legislative quarters, where the Martins Amaewhule -led lawmakers' sit. Fubara was at the premises to present the 2025 Rivers State budget, as mandated by a Supreme Court judgment. Speaking at the scene, the governor said he had formally contacted the Speaker and other lawmakers but received no response. Former Rivers State governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike during a media Parley on Wednesday, suggested that Governor Fubara should be impeached if found wanting, stating that impeachment is not a criminal offense. He also criticized the current state of the Rivers Assembly. Meanwhile, an old video has resurfaced online, showing Nyesom Wike accusing his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi of abuse of power and destabilizing the Rivers State government. During the media parley, Wike accused Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, of lacking character for organizing a South-South zonal political leaders’ meeting without inviting him and other National Assembly members. Wike suggested that Governor Diri is working in collaboration with Sim Fubara adding that Diri once knelt before him to seek support. In May 2022, Wike visited Governor Douye Diri at the Government House in Yenagoa to seek support ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Congress, where Atiku Abubakar later emerged as the party’s candidate for the 2023 election. Residents of Gishiri community in the federal capital territory, whose homes have been demolished, are appealing to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to come to their aid, as they have been left homeless and are unable to afford the high cost of rent in Abuja. The residents homes and businesses, were said to have been demolished because they were built within the right of way of a road project set for completion by May 2025. The Minister of State for Education has urged Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano state governments to reconsider shutting down schools for Ramadan. The decision to close down schools for Ramadan by the northern governors has sparked outrage, with the Christian Association of Nigeria calling it discriminatory and a violation of non-Muslim students’ rights. The group argues that shutting schools for five weeks worsens Nigeria’s education crisis, with UNICEF reporting 18.3 million out-of-school children in 2024. The Nigerian Senate has responded to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint at the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York, where she alleged that her suspension from the senate was in retaliation for accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of Sexual harassment. In a letter through Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and read by House Representative, Kafilat Ogbara, the senate clarified that Natasha was Suspended because of gross misconduct, and not Sexual Harassment. The senate maintained that procedures and necessary actions under the Senate rules were observed before Senator Natasha was suspended.
