We finally managed to secure a Wapiti ballot—an experience we’d been looking forward to for ages. While it was incredible to hunt in such prime country, we couldn’t help but feel a bit let down by the condition of the animals we saw and the noticeable lack of mature stags. That’s all part of the hunting game, though—sometimes, the challenge is as much about perseverance as it is about success.
The weather wasn’t exactly on our side, with only 4 out of 9 days free from rain. But even with the wet and wild conditions, being surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Fiordland made it all worthwhile. It’s hard to put a price on that kind of adventure, though the trip certainly left a dent in the wallet!
We had a solid plan going in, focusing on sticking to hilltops and glassing clearings to cover as much ground as possible. Unfortunately, a few disputes with other parties claiming the block threw a wrench in the works—a common frustration from what I’ve heard. Those tensions aside, it was still an incredible journey.
For now, I don’t think I’ll be heading back there anytime soon. But looking back, even with the challenges, it was a privilege to step foot in such a legendary hunting area.
