On May 19, 1962, a motion calling on Akintola to resign as the Premier of the Western Region was moved. The motion was carried by 81 to 29! The meeting had lasted 11 straight hours!
However, the party leadership waited patiently for Akintola’s resignation letter, but none was forthcoming.
The embattled Premier then called a press conference and announced that he was not going to resign from his post. Instead of a letter of resignation, Akintola wrote two letters.
