Time please, ladies and gentlemen
Time to venture to the haunted hostelries of Edinburgh.
The offence of ''drunkenness'' was first recorded in 1436. It was a substantial social problem, resulting in crime, adding to the misery of the squalid conditions people faced.
By 1830 both Glasgow and Edinburgh had a pub for every 130 people. You could sell alcohol at any given time of the day if someone were willing to work.
Every close street was littered with taverns and spirit merchants plying their trade. It was an opportunity to make money due to the shared love of alcohol. However, many became rich in the misery of others, and the illegal drinking dens favoured by the poor became a hotbed of criminality. One only must look at the ''career'' of William Hare and William Burke to realise how alcohol played its part.
Today we venture to a selection of Edinburgh’s haunted hostelries. Hear terrifying tales and accounts of things that continue to go bump in the night.

This episode of North Edinburgh Nightmares was an excellent project from start to finish. It was only possible with the exceptional help of all involved.
