Last week I went on what was supposed to be a day trip with a few friends, but that ended up with me spending 4 days up in the highlands!
We started out driving towards Kerlingafjöll, which can be a challenge during the winter. The road is marked as impassable, which means it only accessible for large modified vehicles, and you're very much on you own. Insurances are not valid if you drive into those areas, and you will have to pay out of pocket for any rescue operations that might be needed if you get stuck etc.
With that said, we had a great first day with sun and almost no wind, and the snow was no big issue up to Kerlingafjöll.
I spent the night in that area and the started to have some snow issues :)

An unplanned 4-day winter journey deep into the Icelandic highlands, on snowy roads, whiteout conditions, geothermal areas, and stunning mountain views--but with the comfort of my camper! What started as a simple day trip turned into a full expedition across remote landscapes, including a night at Kjalhraun, geothermal pools, and weather stations in total isolation.
