In an attempt to rescue the besieged Mullativu Army Camp, Sri Lanka Army deployed Special Forces by air, to secure a beachhead in Alampil to allow the other reinforcements to land from the sea. They were able to secure the Alampil beach after 5 days of intense fighting with LTTE which had incurred heavy losses on the Special Forces including the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion of the Special Forces Regiment.
