On November 21, 2024, the star WOH G64 was photographed. We had obtained the first image of a star outside our galaxy. A snapshot that showed the last gasps of a titan on the threshold of its death. The blurred lament of an entity 163,000 years away. Of the largest star in the known Universe.
Since the discovery of this red supergiant in 1978, the community was interested in the unusual characteristics of the star. Beyond its incredible size, the extreme loss of mass revealed that WOH G64 was in full preparation for its death. In the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy close to the Milky Way, rested a star that allowed us to get closer to the twilight of a God of light.
The dream of obtaining a direct, close-up image of WOH G64 had germinated. An unprecedented ambition that required technology capable of taking an image of a star beyond the Milky Way, which for a long time seemed impossible. It was not until 2010 that we were ready, through the "Gravity" instrument installed on the Very Large Telescope, to portray that giant and obtain one of the most important photographs in the history of humanity.
