The pass road, with a length of approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles), is part of the route between Interlaken and Andermatt. It is a modern engineering marvel, built between 1938 and 1945, though it was not officially opened until 1946 due to World War II. It features numerous tunnels, bridges, and hairpin turns, meticulously integrated into the rugged landscape.
The pass reaches an altitude of 2,224 meters (7,297 feet) above sea level at its summit. The road is typically open only during the summer months, usually from June to October, due to heavy snowfall in winter. The pass offers stunning views of the Steingletscher, with a viewing platform and a suspension bridge near the summit allowing visitors to appreciate the glacier's beauty.
A unique feature of the pass is the Stone Gallery, a series of tunnels and galleries carved into the rock face, providing shelter from avalanches and rockfalls. While built relatively recently, the pass has historical significance as a strategic route through the Alps, and its construction during wartime is a testament to Swiss engineering and resilience.
