I found this ancient white oak in Novi, MI. It is over 200yrs old, the owner counted the annual rings. This wooden bowl falls more into the functional art category than it does a utility bowl for eating. That's one of the greatest things about woodturning is versatility. Not all wood bowls have to be utilitarian and made for eating soup. Not all hand turned bowls have to be works of art. This hand turned, family heirloom falls somewhere in between. Osmo Polyx hard wax oil finish is perfect for this, it has a deep and warm luster but after curing becomes food safe. Food safe finish is important for woodturners because you never know when a customer or friend might try and use one of your turnings for food use.
