I am never sure what to get my mum for Mother's Day, so I decided to make her something this year. She has a Gucci watch with a bee emblem that she was given on her 21st birthday, but unfortunately, it hasn't worked for a few years. I came up with the great idea of getting the watch fixed and presenting it in a custom watch box. That's when the plan went to pot. As I am a massive lover of horology I didn't think it would be suspicious if I was to ask to see the watch, with Mum not knowing my intention of taking it to a jeweller for repair. Unfortunately, it couldn't be found the first time she looked for it. About a week later (while making the box) I decided to ask again, I didn't want to come across as suspicious, so I wasn't asking every day, but the watch still couldn't be found. After this more thorough unsuccessful look, I decided to tell mum what I was doing.
The watch still hasn't been found but there are thoughts within the family as to where it might be. Until it's found, I guess I will have to use it for one of my watches.
The box is made from Ash, Panga Panga, Pau Rosa, and Birdseye maple. I tried to use timbers that mean a lot to me, and help to show off my skill and craftsmanship, did I achieve that?
The piece is sanded to 10000 grit and finished with Danish oil and wax.
I will be making more of these pieces, as I said horology is a passion of mine and I was to create custom boxes for all of my watches. If you are interested in commissioning a piece send me an email 😁

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.
