Wormhole is a work-in-progess, site-specific audio/visual performance project that integrates live internet data into Unity and Max/Msp to explore the intricate relationship between technology, surveillance, and human perception. With a dystopian futuristic perspective, the project investigates how the vast scale of data in a virtual world distorts our perception of time and space.
The project draws inspiration from the stark and eerie aesthetics of cyberpunk literature and films, presenting a world where omnipresent surveillance has become the norm. Its UI design mimics surveillance camera feeds, with dynamic rearrangements driven by OSC signals from Max/Msp, reflecting the chaotic and fragmented nature of modern digital surveillance systems. Each visual update, sourced from live Google API data, reinforces the themes of constant monitoring and data-driven control.
The visual composition features high contrast, neon hues, and glitch effects, evoking a disconcerting yet hypnotic atmosphere. The real-time audio component complements the visuals with industrial and ambient soundscapes, heightening the immersive experience. Together, the visuals and audio create a cohesive narrative that emphasizes the dissonance and fragmentation of a hyper-connected society.
In Wormhole, aesthetics are not merely a visual strategy but a means of emphasizing deeper themes of surveillance, control, and the erosion of individuality in a data-saturated world. The interplay between chaotic visuals and haunting audio underscores the loss of coherence and intimacy in a world increasingly defined by technology’s pervasive influence.
By integrating live internet data, the project blurs the line between reality and virtuality, challenging audiences to consider the implications of living in a world where every action is monitored, analyzed, and controlled. It critiques the dystopian trajectory of a society driven by relentless surveillance and questions the very nature of freedom and privacy in the digital age.
Currently a work-in-progress, Wormhole is being developed into a performance capable of lasting up to two hours, pushing the boundaries of real-time audiovisual storytelling.
