Coming up….It’s one of the most mind-bending tracks in rock history—a fusion of blistering guitar riffs, wild improvisation, and sheer audacity. Hocus Pocus by the Dutch rock band Focus. Born from a mix of spontaneity and a wicked sense of humor, The Guitarist Jan Akkerman played it as a send-up of all the rock bands of his time… He wrote it as a joke to take the piss out of them a bit and in the process, he created a rock classic that could hold its own alongside his contemporaries. Hocus Pocus was an unexpected masterpiece and defied every convention of the time, proving that music could be both virtuosic and downright fun. It was never supposed to be a hit, and even though there’s plenty of singing in it, it doesn’t really have lyrics.. yet it broke boundaries and climbed the charts, leaving audiences speechless on both sides of the Atlantic. This is the story of how a little madness turned into musical magic as the only yodeling orc song to hit the charts… NEXT on Professor of Rock.

It's time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we celebrate a song that was king for a day, some call ‘em one hit wonders we celebrate them as lightning in a bottle… ya know Spontaneity and creativity are like two sides of the same coin—creativity is all about taking action, while spontaneity is being ready to jump in when inspiration strikes. In creative work, spontaneity is what happens when you roll with ideas as they come, without sticking to a set plan. That kind of openness can lead to some really cool, unexpected results you might not get with a more structured approach. In the thrilling world of rock 'n' roll, few songs capture pure spontaneity better than the international hit "Hocus Pocus" by Focus! and this is such a cool story behind an even cooler song!
The wildly eccentric "Hocus Pocus" by Dutch prog-rockers Focus is a masterpiece of pure improvisation that seemed to come out of nowhere—and it is the only top 20 rock hit to feature yodeling. Thijs van Leer, the vocalist, flutist, keyboardist, and co-founder of Focus, came up with the wild scatting for "Hocus Pocus" on the spot during a rehearsal, letting the energy of the moment guide him. The band was so tight with brilliant song structure, it’s shocking to learn that it was spawned from sheer spontaneity. “Hocus Pocus” wasn’t recorded in a studio, it was created in the wing of the Groeneveld Castle in Baarn, Netherlands. The castle, owned by Thiis van Leer’s girlfriend, Mary, was a gathering place for all types of artists, especially cinematographers.
The artists would meet there, sometimes just to hang out and play chess. The band rented an area of the castle for a little bit of cash, and used the space to work on music. You could say that “Hocus Pocus” was created in a real…magic castle: So Thijs van Leer’s journey into music began early, almost as if it was destined.
