The X-Caddis dry fly is a versatile and highly effective pattern designed to imitate adult caddisflies, particularly during or after an emergence when fish are actively feeding on spent or fluttering insects. Developed by Craig Mathews and John Juracek, it features a distinctive trailing shuck of Z-Lon or Antron to mimic the exoskeleton of an emerging caddis. The fly’s deer hair wing gives it excellent buoyancy and a realistic profile, while its simple yet durable design ensures it floats well in fast-moving or still waters. The X-Caddis is particularly effective during caddis hatches but can also work as a general attractor pattern, making it a favorite for trout anglers worldwide.
