Xiamen (厦门), also known as Amoy, is a sub-provincial city in southeastern Fujian, China, located beside the Taiwan Strait. It comprises six districts: Huli, Siming, Jimei, Tong'an, Haicang, and Xiang'an, covering an area of 1,700.61 square kilometers with a population of 5,163,970 as of the 2020 census. Xiamen is known for its significant historical and cultural heritage, including its role as one of China's original four special economic zones opened to foreign investment and trade in the early 1980s under the Opening Up Policy. The city boasts a major international seaport, ranked as the 7th-largest container port in China and 13th in the world. Xiamen's economy is robust, with a GDP of CNY 806.649 billion (US$114.472 billion) in 2023. The city is also a center for scientific research and home to several major universities, including Xiamen University, one of China's most prestigious institutions. Xiamen's rich history, economic significance, and educational institutions make it a vital city in China's landscape.
