Xi'an (西安), the capital of Shaanxi Province, is one of the oldest cities in China and served as the capital for several of the most significant dynasties in Chinese history, including the Zhou (周), Qin (秦), Han (汉), and Tang (唐). Known as the starting point of the Silk Road (丝绸之路), Xi'an holds a pivotal place in the history of international trade and cultural exchange between the East and the West.
One of the city's most famous attractions is the Terracotta Army (兵马俑), a collection of thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, horses, and chariots buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang (秦始皇). This UNESCO World Heritage site provides a fascinating glimpse into ancient Chinese military history and the power of the first emperor of a unified China.
The city is also home to the ancient City Wall (城墙), which dates back to the Ming Dynasty (明朝). This well-preserved fortification encircles the old city and offers visitors a chance to walk or bike along its top, providing panoramic views of Xi'an’s mix of modern and ancient architecture.
Xi'an's Muslim Quarter (回民街) is another must-visit destination, showcasing the city’s rich cultural diversity. This bustling area is famous for its vibrant street food scene, offering local delicacies such as roujiamo (肉夹馍) and yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍), which reflect the city's historical ties to Central Asia.
Additionally, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) is a significant landmark in Xi'an, originally built during the Tang Dynasty to house Buddhist scriptures brought from India by the monk Xuanzang (玄奘). The pagoda is not only an important religious site but also a symbol of the city's long-standing cultural and religious history.
