长江是亚洲第一长河，全长6387千米，长度居世界第三位。
长江发源于青藏高原的唐古拉山脉各拉丹冬峰西南侧，
干流主要流经11个省市区，
在崇明岛以东注入东海。
水资源总量9616亿立方米，约占全国河流径流总量的36%，为黄河的20倍。长江流域内共有通航河流3600多条，占全国内河通航里程的70%，在全国内河航道中有着重要地位。
