A sizeable proportion of the Indian population is anaemic, and it largely has to do with the typical Indian diet that is high on grains and legumes but low on animal protein. While it is slightly better among meat eaters, most non-veg folks in India don't eat meat regularly enough.
To make things worse, most supplements are also largely ineffective unless people do smart things like consume them with a bit of lime juice and eat them before meals.
