Symbolic links are files that point to other files or directories, functioning as shortcuts. They are also known as symlinks or soft links.
They help organize files, save disk space, can create backups and increase efficiency in locating files.
In Linux, we use the “ln” command with the “-s” flag to specify that the link should be a soft link. But links can also be different, using so-called “hard links” that create an entry with a different name in the filesystem for the same set of data.
We cannot confuse them with “.desktop” files, which are responsible for the program shortcuts that we see on the desktop and in the menus of Linux distros.
In today's video, you'll learn how symbolic links work and how to use them to your advantage to modify the installation location of programs on Linux, such as flatpaks and Steam games, among many other features.
