Travel Documentary India. 🇮🇳 Kerala's backwaters - we found a SLICE OF PARADISE on earth! Are you looking to escape the hustle and bustle of life? Then we invite you to join us on a most magical private boat trip through the enchanting backwaters in Kumarakom, Kerala ("God's own country").

Join us as we glide through these tranquil waters on a small shikara boat, experiencing the daily life and warm hospitality of the local people who live there. Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty that surrounds us. Enjoy and relax!

A shikara tour is the perfect way to experience the serene beauty and rich culture of Kerala's backwaters, offering a unique and intimate connection with nature and the local way of life, especially in regions like Kumarakom and Alleppey. Shikaras are traditional wooden boats similar to gondolas. Smaller and more manoeuvrable than houseboats, they can navigate the narrow canals where the locals live.

The backwaters of Kerala, a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes, and inlets, stretch over 900 kilometers and are a unique geographical feature that has fascinated travelers for ages! The backwaters are surrounded by lush greenery, paddy fields, and coconut groves, creating a picturesque landscape that is often described as a tropical paradise.

Kumarakom, situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake, is one of the most renowned destinations in this water world. This small village has become synonymous with Kerala's famous backwaters, attracting visitors from around the globe. Known for its lush landscapes, diverse wildlife, and serene atmosphere, Kumarakom is a true gem of Kerala.

Kumarakom, originally a fishing and agricultural village, underwent significant transformation when British settler Alfred George Baker developed the land in the mid-19th century and established the foundation for its current bird sanctuary. The 1980s marked the beginning of tourism with the conversion of traditional kettuvallams into houseboats, and in 2007, the Kerala government launched "responsible tourism" to engage the local community and promote sustainability. Today, Kumarakom is an award-winning ecotourism destination.

At the end of our boat ride we leave with our hearts filled with peace and awe. Kumarakom and its surroundings show us that true paradise lies here (not only in the breathtaking scenery but also in the pure kindness of the people).

As always, another highlight at the end of our day is exploring the local food. This time, we're indulging in the fabulous South Indian dish known as Chicken Kizhi Parotta!

Thank you so much for joining us on this magical tour.

👩🏼🧔🏻 WHO ARE WE?
Hi, we're Nicole from Austria/Germany and Roberto from Switzerland/Italy! We believe that traveling is more than just sightseeing! When we travel, we look for spontaneous and AUTHENTIC ENCOUNTERS with THE LOCAL LIFE (and local people of all backgrounds) in other cultures, the country (nature, villages, cities) and the food. Our travels are about uncovering the REAL & UNSCRIPTED LIFE in each destination, with all its sunny & shady sides! We try to find out what really makes each country unique, beyond the postcard-perfect images.

Thank you for being part of this journey! It means everything to us.
