Photography is about creativity, storytelling, and how you see the world—not just the gear you use. Yet, the camera industry and marketing hype have convinced people that newer is always better. More megapixels, sharper lenses, and the latest tech won’t make you a better photographer. In fact, some of the most expensive lenses, like a £75K lens, are incredibly soft! Many photographers chase specs instead of character, but the best lens for street photography isn’t necessarily the sharpest—it’s the one with personality. Fujifilm’s older lenses, like the Fujifilm 35mm f1.4, have a beautiful rendering that newer, ultra-sharp lenses often lack. The same applies to landscape photography—the best lenses for landscape photography aren’t just about sharp corners, but about depth, color, and how they bring a scene to life. That’s why I’m back to using older Fujifilm cameras like the Fujifilm X-Pro1, Fujifilm X-T1, and Fujifilm X-E1—they still deliver incredible images today.
We’ve been led to believe that buying the best camera or the latest gear will instantly improve our photography, but relying on modern tech—like AI-driven cameras—can actually make us worse photographers. A sharp, clinical lens doesn’t mean a great photo. Mastering manual focus, shooting with intention, and learning to work with imperfections will do far more for your skills than chasing the latest specs. So if you’re upgrading, do it for the right reasons—not just because marketing tells you to. Whether you're shooting street photography or landscape photography, focus on creativity over consumerism. Do you really need a Ferrari to drive to the shops? Or will a Honda Civic get you there just the same? 🚗💨
