An attack drone collided with and damaged the roof of a steel shelter covering a portion of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant – specifically Chornobyl Reactor 4 – Thursday overnight, causing a fire to break out at the dangerous and abandoned nuclear infrastructure site.
The “high-explosive warhead” was a Russian drone, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who suggested the attack was plotted to coincide with the first day of the Munich Security Conference – which he is attending, and Russia opted not to. “It was a strike on the most dangerous object in Europe,” Zelenskyy told reporters.
Responding to Zelenskyy’s comments amid an almost-three-year-war, Russian officials denied any involvement in the attack, but instead pointed the finger back at Ukraine, suggesting it was a “provocation planned by the Kyiv Regime.”
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi said radiation levels have not increased as a result of the attack, and that the strike did not breach the plant’s inner-containment shell.
Since Chornobyl’s Reactor 4 exploded in 1986, it has been known as the world's worst civil nuclear catastrophe. The city of Prypiat was immediately abandoned, and since then, the plant has been undergoing decommissioning – which is expected to take decades to fully complete. Reactor 4 has stayed under its protective “sarcophagus” to contain lingering radiation since the year the disaster occurred.
