Russia and the US have agreed to work towards improving ties and ending the Ukraine war in landmark talks - which did not include Ukraine. The US Secretary of State hailed the first step of a "long and difficult journey" after American and Russian officials sat down together for high-level talks in Saudi Arabia. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, claimed Washington had become "more understanding" of Moscow.
However Ukraine was frozen out of the historic meeting, leading President Zelenskyy to demand that decisions must not be taken behind Kyiv's back.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to negotiate with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy "if necessary."
