Hi, thank you for checking out my video. This is not a promotion video. I purchased ZOOM R4 by myself to replace my old R8 multitrack recorder, which I have used for 99% of my videos. Since there is a big lacking of reviews and especially sound tests of the built-in mic of this device on youtube I have filmed a short sound test of the device. Please note that I am not a sound engineer, I am sure I could get much better results by EQ - ing, mic placement, mastering etc. This is just a raw multi track recording in a not sound-treated room. Here is what I did:
Take 1: built-in mono mic, four mono tracks. Reverb 25, inner voices panned out 25 left and 25 right. Solo and bass 10 left, 10 right respectively. No EQ.
Take 2: Rode M5 pencil mic, above the instrument about 70-80cm. Four mono tracks. Reverb 25, inner voices panned out 25 left and 25 right. Solo and bass panned 10 left, 10 right respectively. No EQ.
Take 3 (and 4): Rode M5 matched pair in A-B configuration, 20cm apart, 70-80cm above the instrument. Reverb 25, no EQ. The device does not allow panning paired stereo tracks (which is understandable), so I recorded bass line and the melody straight under the mic and I did the inner voices standing a bit away left and right from the mic.
To record the bass line I experimented with the R4 built-in insert effect called "Pitch shifter" (I hope I remember the name right) turned down 12 semitones (one octave) and the "dry' signal at zero. It sounds pretty much like a cello but like any octave effect it has a bit of delay, so playing something fast will be challenging. Also because insert effect can be only applied to one channel , you can not use it in a stereo (paired 1-2 or 3-4 track) situation. Therefore in all 3 takes the "cello" line is mono. This effect sounds pretty "electronic" but it works surprisingly good, even better than my dedicated Boss Octave pedal!
