1)Nutrient Deficiencies

Some essential nutrients are harder to obtain from a vegan diet, including:

Vitamin B12 –Crucial for nerve function and red blood cell production. Deficiency can lead to fatigue, nerve damage, and anemia.

Iron –Plant-based iron (non-heme iron) is less easily absorbed than animal-based iron, increasing the risk of anemia.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA) – Found primarily in fish, these are important for brain and heart health.

Zinc –Essential for immune function and wound healing, but less bioavailable in plant foods.

Calcium & Vitamin D- Important for bone health; deficiencies can increase the risk of osteoporosis.Homocysteinemia: Causes, Risks, and Management

****Homocysteinemia is a condition where there are elevated levels of homocysteine (an amino acid) in the blood. High homocysteine levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other health issues.

Causes of High Homocysteine

1)Vitamin Deficiencies (Most common cause)

Vitamin B12 deficiency (common in vegans and vegetarians)

Folate (Vitamin B9) deficiency

Vitamin B6 deficiency

These vitamins are needed to convert homocysteine into other beneficial compounds. A lack of them leads to a buildup in the blood.

2)Genetic Mutations (MTHFR Mutation)

Some people have a genetic mutation in the MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) gene, which affects how their body processes homocysteine.
