In the heart of the Canadian wilderness, where the whispers of ancient forests blend with the symphony of flowing waters, a journey of unparalleled beauty awaits. Welcome to a realm of untamed grandeur, where time stands still, and nature's poetry is written in every ripple, every whisper of the wind.
This is the Missinaibi River, a liquid tapestry of epic landscapes, a canvas painted by the hand of Mother Nature herself.
Join me and four new friends for Part 2 of this epic 10-day, 200km backcountry canoe trip on a historic northern Ontario river. Our adventure down the Missinaibi is not without its unique features and challenges; as we paddle through its pristine wilderness, we'll face the exhilarating test of covering long distances, our arms becoming our compass in the untamed landscape. The river, with its playful twists and turns, challenges us with exhilarating whitewater rapids that demand our utmost focus and teamwork (and for me, this would be only my third time ever running whitewater in a canoe!) Add to this the historic wildfire season across much of the country and a province-wide fire ban, and you're starting to get a sense of what this backcountry canoe trip is all about!
Part 3 begins at First Lake Rapids on Day 7, where we paddle long sections of flatwater with the occasional swift or rapid, until 31km later, we reach Two Portage Falls, our destination for the day.
Day 8 sees us depart Two Portage Falls and hit loads of whitewater, passing Pond Falls, Devil Cap Falls, Devil's Shoepack Falls, then Devil Rapids before finally arriving, just 6km downriver from where the day started, at Devil Base Falls. While we didn't make a ton of distance on this day, the next marked campsite was 21km away, and it was already getting late in the day as the slew of rapids, swifts and falls was slow work. But since we still had the rest of the day, we opted for some playtime: some of us swam, others ran some gentle whitewater, others fished, but, we all had fun!
On Day 9, we woke from a cold night to find a thick mist hanging over the Missinaibi. It wasn't long before the sun burned it all away, so we headed off from Devil Base toward Albany Rapids, a looong, labyrinth-like set of rocky swifts and rapids that made for some fun runs! We ended the day at the incredible Big Beaver Rapids, where rugged Canadian Shield granite pokes out of the earth in myriad formations. We spent the evening splashing around in an awesome swimming hole before hitting the sac for the last time on the Missinaibi River. Tomorrow would be our last day on this magnificent river.
Day 10 was bittersweet. We left Big Beaver Rapids knowing that this would be our last day of paddling on this trip. It was a rainy morning that brought us past Little Beaver Rapids, which we had no trouble running, then Sharp Rock Rapids, which we chose to line rather than portage, Glassy Falls, which was a mandatory portage, past Crow Island rapids and finally, to our point of departure in the town of Mattice. We could now reflect on the awesome 10-day, 200km journey that had presented us with so many challenges, brought us so much joy and excitement, and would forge lasting friendships.
I hope you enjoy Part 3, the final installment of my series, the Missinaibi, and please don't forget to LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT, and HIT THAT BELL for future uploads! I have many other great outdoor adventures in the works that I hope to share with all of you.
