Back To The Big Hill! BIG Trains Passing On The Hill In The Reverse Curves. Train Led By BNSF Locomotive With BNSF DPU Working Hard Going Up The Hill Passing A Giant 15K Ton Train Going Down The Hill. Then Another Norfolk Southern Train Works Up The Hill In Crescent Springs, Kentucky. Look How Many Cars A Single Locomotive Can Handle Going Down The Hill! 4 Trains And A Close Look At The Rail.
After I got back from Florida one of the first things that I did was return to the hill that climbs out of the Ohio River Valley. The first train is an empty grain train going down the hill. The train stopped at the Beechwood Road railroad crossing in Crescent Springs before going down to Ludlow on the way to Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio. After a crew change a single locomotive eases a huge cut of covered hoppers down the hill. Count the cars and let me know how many cars a single locomotive can handle.
After that I moved about a mile south to the "S" curves in Crescent Springs. We see another train easing down the hill. The conductor waves to me and then the train stops for a short time. While it is stopped a heavy train with a DPU shoving the rear passes it going up the hill. This train is powered by BNSF locomotives and the engineer gives me a wave! Listen to the locomotives working hard! I love that sound. We take a close look at the rail that I filmed earlier when nothing was moving.
Shortly after the BNSF led train we see another train going up the hill. The engineer gives me a short horn salute! Listen to the locomotives as they pass me and notice the dust clouds around the wheels after it passes me. That is from the locomotives sanding the rails. Sand is applied to the rails to prevent the wheels from slipping while pulling the heavy train up the grade.
Right as the end of the train passes me I noticed the other train started rolling down hill again. Check out the mid train DPU. This is a huge train! I heard the dispatcher talking on the radio about moving a 15K ton train down the hill and this had to be that train. After it passed, I stuck around for a little bit waiting for a local to go down the hill but I finally gave up and left. I wanted to get on the way home before it got dark.
Don't forget the Live Action Pets and the slide show at the end of this video.
