Route 156 is a general national highway from Gifu City in Gifu Prefecture to Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture via Ginan Town in Hashima District, Seki City, Mino City, Gujō City, Takayama City, Shirakawa Village in Ōno District, Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture, and Tonami City.
Travel along the Shōgawa and Nagara Rivers in the mountainous area that straddles Gifu Prefecture and Toyama Prefecture, and continue along the scenic road overlooking clear streams and dam lakes.
The section from Lake Miboro in Shirakawa Village, Ōno District, Gifu Prefecture, which connects World Heritage gassho-zukuri villages such as Gokayama and Shirakawagō, to Komaki Dam in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, is also called the Hietsukyō Gasshō Line.
