The new Q5 uses a new style of quattro ultra, which means it will use electronics to decouple the rear drive and go front-wheel drive only. However, it defaults to quattro, unlike competitors that normally default to fwd and only switch to awd when needed. The quattro ultra system will always default to awd but swtich to fwd under conditions to save fuel.
