In early November, I toured around Karuizawa at the height of the autumn foliage.
Usui Toge Miharashidai, one of the famous Karuizawa autumn color viewing spots, is about 15 minutes from Karuizawa Station by car and about 8 minutes from the center of old Karuizawa, so it is a great place to visit while sightseeing in Karuizawa.
The Kumano Koudai Shrine, located near the Usui Pass Observation Platform, is a shrine on the border between Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. There are many sights to see, such as the Shinanoki, a sacred tree said to be 1,000 years old, and komainu (guardian dogs) said to have been created in the mid-Muromachi period (1336-1573).
