This talk goes into ways of making bold type compositions by focusing on non-conceptual aspects of type: hierarchy, font choice and visual anchors. Joshua shows work from a range of historical and contemporary designers including Jan Tschichold, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hoffmann, Herb Lubalin, Jacqueline Casey, Non-Format, The Remingtons, and Shin Dokho and breaks down what’s happening in these pieces.

This lecture was given as the summary of Joshua’s “Typographic Posters” workshop at Minneapolis College of Art & Design. “Typographic Posters” is a one-night, hands-on workshop utilizing step-by-step methodology for designing with type only without needing a research or ideation phase. The goal of the workshop is to provide students with a means of working through creative block or against brutal timelines when originality often suffers.
