Himeji Castle is a Japanese castle located at 68 Honmachi, Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Its main buildings, including the keep and towers built in the early Edo period, are still preserved and designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. Additionally, the area inside the central moat, including the main bailey, is designated as a special historic site of Japan, known as the "Himeji Castle Site."
The UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Treasure Himeji Castle, was registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural heritage site on December 11, 1993, during the Heisei era. It was the first Japanese site to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, alongside Nara's Horyu-ji Temple. Himeji Castle has also been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. Another name for Himeji Castle is the White Heron Castle.
