Rainy Aftermath Walk at Takidanji Temple, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture
雨上がりの瀧谷寺 散策 福井県坂井市
Takidanji Temple is a Shingon sect Chisan-ha temple located in Mikuni Town, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. It was founded in 1375 (Eiwa 1) by Saint Eiken. The temple has been revered by historical figures such as the Asakura clan, warlord Katsuie Shibata, and the Matsudaira and Arima families, the lords of Fukui and Maruoka domains.
The temple grounds feature numerous historically significant structures, including the Main Hall, Kannon Hall, Kuri (priest’s quarters), Sanmon (main gate), Chinju-do, and Kaizan-do, many of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The Sanmon, in particular, is said to have been donated by Katsuie Shibata during the Tenshō era. The treasure hall houses valuable Buddhist statues, ancient documents, and a National Treasure—a gilded bronze gong with intricate patterns.
The temple garden was the first in Fukui Prefecture to be designated as a National Scenic Beauty in 1929. Created during the Edo period, this landscape garden is unique in allowing views from all directions. A notable feature is the karesansui (dry landscape) garden, designed by the renowned Showa-era landscape artist, Kinsaku Nakane.
Takidanji Temple is cherished by visitors for its historical architecture, stunning gardens, and rich cultural heritage.
