This R107 Video: Lapping Valves and Vacuum Test
I am documenting every part of this vehicle as I put it back together. The idea is to end up with the best documented 560SL rebuilds on the Internet.
Please subscribe. You may need this one day and I will be here for you.

In this video I start off by comparing genuine Mercedes-Benz intake valves to new TRW intake valves. I purchased these TRW valves from FCPEuro:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-engine-intake-valve-560sec-560sel-560sl-1170500126
After comparing the valves I then wanted to establish a baseline for the vacuum test of the valves and valve seats. To do that I used my DIY valve vacuum testing tool and first tested the old valve seat and then compared that to a new valve.
After establishing a valve seat vacuum test baseline I then lap the valves. In this video I compare Permatex's valve grinding compound, the Chemico Grinding Paste and the Goodson's 400 grit valve lapping compound.
After lapping all the valves I then re-test them using my DIY valve vacuum testing tool and share the results.
I want everyone who visits my channel to know about a friend of mine name Tasos @TasosMoschatos His videos inspire me to be more like him. The man is amazing I feel. There is NO way I would be this far without his help. You can find his YouTube channel at:

My videos are not sponsored by anyone. The products and tools I use are products and tools I have purchased with my own money. I include links below to any special tools or products used in this video.
See my DIY Valve Seat Vacuum Tester video for information and links for that tool here:

These are the necessary plugs and tubing needed to vacuum test your valve seats without installing your seals or springs. I bought the 40 Pc 1/16" to 3/4" High Temp Silicone Rubber Tapered Plug Kit. I like it:

You then need this tubing for the valves. Latex Rubber Tubing Tube 5/16" (8mm) ID x 1/2" (12mm) OD:

If you are going to measure you valves you will need a good micrometer that has .0001 graduation. I purchased the RUITOOL outside micrometer set with a 0-4inch Range and a 0.0001" graduation. It has a ratchet stop and carbide heads. It seems to work very well.

I also used a caliper. I own the Kynup Digital Caliper Tool:
https://amzn.to/3NZp32J
I recently purchased the Fuzion digital scale with 6 units conversion. It is very inexpensive and seems to produced consistent measurements:

To measure the angle of the valve I used the General Tools Stainless Steel Angle Protractor #17:
https://amzn.to/3d3uZKN
I used the DYKEM Layout Fluid to mark everything before I started lapping:

You need a lapping stick to lap your valves. I purchased the Performance Tool W86552 2-Piece Valve Lapper Set:
https://amzn.to/3bB9joX
The two recommended lapping compounds that I would recommend are one, the Chemico Grinding Paste:

The valve lapping paste I ended up using in this video was the Goodson 400 Grit Lapping Compound. I feel it worked great:

This video is very detailed and is intended for the absolute beginner (ME). This is how I did things. If you see a problem, let me and the world know by leaving a comment.
Disclosure: I have never pulled an engine before and I have never rebuilt one either. This video series is documenting an inexperienced old guy tore apart his 1987 560SL.
