波平は薩摩の古い地名を由来とし、その地で鍛刀を行った鍛冶集団を指します。平安時代を起源とし、以後南北朝までの作が「古波平」と区分されます。
鎌倉時代より幾多のエピソード、記録に散見される「波平」の名刀。
中央から遥か彼方の最南の地、薩摩で何故名刀は生まれたのか？
背景となった様々な要因を挙げ検証、その謎に迫まります。
加えて、源平盛衰記に登場する平家の猛者越中前司盛俊の最後の場面とそこに登場する波平の太刀を紹介いたします。

This is a mid-Heian period tachi, considered to be the oldest existing sword made after the establishment of the definitive Japanese sword form. We are presenting a series on tachi from the Heian period with their 1000-year history.
This Heian period tachi has been authenticated as Ko-Naminohira. Naminohira derives from an old place name in Satsuma, referring to a group of swordsmiths who forged swords in that region. Originating in the Heian period, works made until the Nanboku-chō period are classified as "Ko-Naminohira" (Ancient Naminohira).
The renowned "Naminohira" blades appear in numerous episodes and records from the Kamakura period onward. Why were such masterpieces created in Satsuma, the southernmost region far from the center?
We examine and analyze various contributing factors to unravel this mystery. Additionally, we introduce the final scene of the fierce Heike warrior Etchū-no-Zenji Moritoshi from the Tale of the Heike (Genpei Seisuiki) and the Naminohira tachi that appears in it.
