While using classical Japanese painting techniques, he adds modern elements to his paintings. This is called Japanese painting, and the main character of this time is a person who draws the scenery and lifestyle of Japan in a beautiful and humorous way. This is TARO YAMAMOTO, a Japanese painter who is often called "modern RINPA".
Pine trees and cranes have been drawn as auspicious motifs since ancient times. YAMAMOTO's "Year-end and new year folding screen" shows an airplane crossing the sun, a Christmas tree and a reindeer. In 2015, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of RINPA and the 30th anniversary of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros., we created a folding screen with the motif of "Fujin Raijin Zu Byobu".
Since 2018, YAMAMOTO has been an associate professor at the current Kyoto University of the Arts, which is also his alma mater. In 2021, I also challenged a new project with my students. Mr. Yamamoto says that he would be happy if more people would use his own work as a stepping stone and try to experience art, given that there is something that can be seen casually.
