龍穏寺は平安時代（西暦807年）に修験者達の寺として創建されました（当時の名前は不明だそうです）が、その後、西暦1200年頃に曹洞宗の寺院になりました。
また、江戸時代に関東における曹洞宗の宗政を司った3箇所の寺院（関三刹）の一つになりました。
Ryuonji Temple was founded in the Heian period (807 AD) as a temple for ascetic monks (its name at the time is unknown),
but later became a Soto Zen temple around 1200 AD.
In addition, during the Edo period, it became one of the three temples (the Kan Sansatsu) that were in charge of the religious affairs of the Soto Zen sect in the Kanto region.
江戸城築城(徳川家康による築城前から存在していた前身の江戸城山門の扁額は「長昌山」、同時期に再建された表門（総門）は「龍穏寺」です。)で有名な太田道灌と父の道真に縁が深く、境内には道灌像と二人の墓所があります。
The temple has a deep connection with Ota Dokan, who is famous for building Edo Castle (the predecessor of which existed before Tokugawa Ieyasu built it), and his father, Dosin, and within the grounds there is a statue of Dokan and the graves of both men.
お寺や付近の地名などの由来とされている龍神伝説が有名です。
It is famous for the dragon god legend, which is said to be the origin of the names of the temple and nearby places.
龍神伝説(概要)
かつて、龍穏寺は現在の場所から少し離れた場所にあり、名前も龍穏寺という名前ではなかったそうです。
現在の龍穏寺のある場所は深い淵があり、越生を訪れる人々が体を休める場所だったのですが、
いつしか悪い龍が住み着くようになり、人々も近づかず、荒れた地になってしまったようです。
困った人々が太田道灌に相談したところ、道灌師である雲崗舜徳(雲崗和尚)に相談しました。
雲崗和尚が法力の力によって龍を龍を退治することに成功すると、法力を受けた龍は悪竜から龍神となり、
淵からは水が溢れ、平らで緑あふれる土地になり、「龍ヶ谷」と呼ばれるようになりました。
人々はこの地にお寺を移築し、雲崗和尚が住職になり、龍を穏やかにした寺という意味の「龍穏寺」としました。
溢れた水は川となり、「龍ヶ谷川」と呼ばれるようになりました。
Dragon God Legend (Summary)
Ryuonji Temple used to be located a short distance from its current location, and was not called Ryuonji Temple.
The current location of Ryuonji Temple had a deep pool, and was a place where people visiting Ogose could rest, but
before long, an evil dragon began to live there, and people avoided it, and the place became a wasteland.
The troubled people consulted Ota Dokan, who in turn consulted Dokan's master, Unkou Shuntoku (Unkou Osho).
When Unkou Osho succeeded in defeating the dragon with the power of the law, the dragon, having received the power of the law, turned from an evil dragon into a dragon god,
and water overflowed from the pool, and the land became flat and green, and came to be called “Tatsugaya”.
The people moved the temple to this place, Unkou Osho became the chief priest, and named it "Ryūonji Temple," which means "the temple that calmed the dragon."
The overflowing water became a river, and came to be called “Tatsugaya River”.
