Santa Fe's Super Chief was the stuff of legends. It was one of the most luxurious and prestigious trains of America's golden age of rail travel.
As air travel rose to prominence and overnight passenger rail lost it's market share, Amtrak was created to take over most passenger operations in 1971. Amtrak maintained the names of the trains on these routes, but the Santa Fe blocked Amtrak from using the Super Chief name!
AT&SF's management was so concerned with protecting the legacy of their once proud flagship train, that they forced Amtrak to name the train on their old route the "Southwest Limited."
After Amtrak's offerings began improving with the introduction of their Superliner fleet, Santa Fe management finally allowed them to rename the train the "Southwest Chief" in the 1980s.
