A Trip to Port Sunlight, Wirral, Merseyside:
Port Sunlight is a model village in Wirral, Merseyside. It was built by Lever Brothers in the 1880s to house their workers in their nearby soap factory. Their most popular product at the time was Sunlight soap, hence the name of the village. The village is far from just functional, however, with the houses built in clusters of a variety of tasteful styles. Indeed, there are 900 grade 2 listed buildings here and the village is viewed as one of the best examples of town planning in the UK.
In addition to the housing there is a world class art gallery, the Lady Lever, a beautiful park area, a museum, a river park, a train station, a church, shops and all of this surrounded by greenery and a multitude of trees. The factory still runs today under the name Unilever and remains one of the leading names in its industry, still producing many household brands.
The village is one of the finest examples of corporate responsibility shown by a company to its workers and whilst not the only example of such benevolence, it came at a time when some corporate leaders were keen to improve the lives of their employees and their families, passing on a greater share of profits in a controlled manner than had generally been the case in industrial environments previously. Their concerns went beyond just housing, including the development of recreational facilities and encouraging employees to engage with the arts. One might have hoped that such practises would have been adopted more widely by now, however, these days it is hard to imagine a company taking such an enlightened approach on behalf of its workers. We really do seem to have gone backwards in this regard since then.
So come with me on a tour of Port Sunlight and see what you think of the immaculately arranged and manicured village.
I hope you enjoy the film.
