In this video we will discuss Type 4 (low noise/high output +3) Reel to Reel tapes. These tapes are really the last tape innovation for consumers, and I am equating them to the +3 pro tapes designed for the 250nWb operating level, with "0" equating to +3 on the traditional consumer machines calibrated for "0" VU at 185nWb (thus +3) Most were back coated. We'll discuss all of the major brands and tape formulations including the Scotch Classic / Master / 250, Sony ULH, BASF LPR/DPR Series, AGFA PEM 268/368/468 and well as TDK GX, Maxell UD-XL and XL-1, and Fuji FB. Type 4 (low noise/high output) tapes were manufactured from the late 1970s through the mid 2000s for the consumer market and until 2022 in the pro market. This is part of a series on a new Reel to Reel tape classification system developed by Reel to Reel Warehouse to help users of tape recorders and reel to reel recording tapes better select the right tape for their machine and application.
