On July 25, 2024, the American Express Gold Card was updated with new benefits and an increased annual fee, going from $250 to $325. Do these changes make the Amex Gold Card worth it? To find out, I decided to use the new and enhanced benefits in this Amex Gold Card Real World Review. Of course, some people will value the new benefits while others will not, but for the right people, the value is there.
The new and enhanced Amex Gold Card benefits are:
1. New $100 Resy Credit: Get up to $100 in annual statement credits ($50 every 6 months) after using an enrolled Amex Gold Card on eligible purchases made at eligible U.S. Resy restaurants, Resy.com, and in the mobile Resy app.
2. New $84 Dunkin’ Credit: Get up to $84 per year (issued as $7/mo.) in statement credits after using an enrolled Amex Gold Card to pay directly at Dunkin’ locations.
3. Revised $120 Dining Credit: American Express added Five Guys as a new dining partner to this credit. Both Shake Shack and Milk Bar will be removed as of September 26, 2024.
4. “Hundreds of New Hotels in Top Destinations: The Hotel Collection, one of American Express Travel’s signature hotel programs, has expanded to over 1,000 properties globally, including more than 300 new properties added to the program this year in 50 new top destinations Card Members want to visit, like Tuscany, Italy; Moab, Utah; and Sapporo, Japan. When travelers book two or more nights at these hotels through American Express Travel, they are eligible to receive a room upgrade upon arrival, noon check-in, and late check-out, which are all subject to availability. These benefits are in addition to a complimentary credit valued at $100 to use towards eligible charges, which may include food and beverage, spa, or other on-property charges.”
The other Amex Gold Card benefits remain largely unchanged, including the $120 Uber Cash benefit, access to Amex Offers, no foreign transaction fees, and the rewards structure that earns in the following ways:
- 4X Restaurants Worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. (Note: This is now capped at up to $50,000 in purchases per year)
- 4X U.S. Supermarkets (up to $25,000 in purchases per year)
- 3X Flights (booked directly or via Amex Travel)
- 2X Prepaid Hotels, Car Rentals, and Cruises (via Amex Travel)
- 1X Other Purchases
