Located just over an hour from Queenstown, the Earnslaw Burn Track is a very challenging day hike, or a slightly less challenging overnight hike to the Earnslaw Glacier in Mt Aspiring National Park, New Zealand. The 26km there and back trail climbs over 900m of elevation. The first 8.5km of this hike is through beautiful beech forest, before leaving the bush line and continuing a further 4.5km through the tussock valley and to the head of the glacier. The forest section is deceptively long with 500m of climb and frequent obstacles of fallen trees, landslides and creek crossings. It is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. But the pure serenity at end of the valley and getting your first glimpse of Earnslaw Glacier makes it all worth it.
