Megan Peters for the Mind, Technology, and Society (MTS) Talk series on May 1, 2023.
Abstract: There are a great number of theories about how phenomenal experience arises from neural computations or representations, and a good deal more about how the brain can introspect on itself to monitor ongoing perceptual processes and their uncertainty. How might we go about arbitrating these theories, and what might we learn about the relationship between metacognition/introspection and phenomenology in the process? This talk covers ongoing work in Dr. Megan Peters' research group linking consciousness and metacognition to one another through neuroscientific, behavioral, and computational approaches, with the goal of articulating and ultimately arbitrating competing theories of how we metacognitively introspect on our perceptual experiences and what such processes might tell us about how conscious awareness is generated.
