➡️ I was chomping at the bit to do another Rush reaction video, so here we are with another analysis! “YYZ” is forever my favorite @rush song, which is the iconic instrumental masterpiece from their album “Moving Pictures” released in 1981. This record has it ALL and showcases Geddy, Alex, and Neil firing on all cylinders (okay, they do that on just about every album.) In my eyes, this is a benchmark track that all bass players should take a stab at - it requires some seriously well-rounded chops to execute. In this video, I listen through “YYZ” and talk about how Rush break all the rules with music theory and chord progressions, their insanely-clever usage of modal scales (whether they knew it or not), tips on executing the track’s most difficult bass licks, why (and how) the song achieves such a lively “Blues Jam” feel, the bridge section’s use of pedal tones and chord inversions, and how the whole dang track is one big ball of unresolved tension - just like airports! 😉
