In this video we will talk about the different methods of stretching and the importance of Active stretching over Passive stretching. The four types of stretching are Static, Dynamic, Active, and Passive.
Passive stretching involves holding a pose without movement, while dynamic stretching involves movement through a stretch. Active stretching is usually dynamic and involves contracting or engaging the muscle being stretched.
Dr. Ryan explains that active stretching is most effective for the neuromuscular system, and that it teaches muscles how to function in a new lengthened range. He demonstrates passive and static stretching for the hamstrings, and active stretching exercises that engage the stretched muscles. Examples include Contra Relax stretching and PNF stretching. Training muscles to function in new lengthened ranges to prevent injury and improve flexibility is emphasized. He also highlights the bridge exercise as an active stretch for the hip flexors, which can help alleviate chronic lower back pain by engaging the core muscles and stabilizing the pelvis.
